چکیده

vVe prove lower bounds on the competitive ratio of randomized algorithms for several on-line scheduling problems. The main result is a bound of ej(e 1) for the on-line problem with objective minimizing the sum of completion times of jobs that arrive over time at their release times and are to be processed on a single machine. This lower bound shows that a randomized algorithm designed in [Chekuri et al. 19971 is a best possible randomized algorithm for this problem.

Efficient Algorithms for Just-In-Time Scheduling on a Batch Processing Machine

Just-in-time scheduling problem on a single batch processing machine is investigated in this research. Batch processing machines can process more than one job simultaneously and are widely used in semi-conductor industries. Due to the requirements of just-in-time strategy, minimization of total earliness and tardiness penalties is considered as the criterion. It is an acceptable criterion for b...

A heuristic approach for multi-stage sequence-dependent group scheduling problems

We present several heuristic algorithms based on tabu search for solving the multi-stage sequence-dependent group scheduling (SDGS) problem by considering minimization of makespan as the criterion. As the problem is recognized to be strongly NP-hard, several meta (tabu) search-based solution algorithms are developed to efficiently solve industry-size problem instances. Also, two different initi...

Scheduling on flexible flow shop with cost-related objective function considering outsourcing options

This study considers outsourcing decisions in a flexible flow shop scheduling problem, in which each job can be processed by either an in-house production line or outsourced. The selected objective function aims to minimize the weighted sum of tardiness costs, in-house production costs, and outsourcing costs with respect to the jobs due date. The purpose of the problem is to select the jobs tha...

Optimal Online Algorithms for Minimax Resource Scheduling

We consider a very general online scheduling problem with an objective to minimize the maximum level of resource allocated. We find a simple characterization of an optimal deterministic online algorithm. We develop further results for two more specific problems, single resource scheduling and hierarchical line balancing. We determine how to compute optimal online algorithms for both problems us...

Development of a Set of Algorithms for the Multi-Project Scheduling Problems

In this paper, the problem of determining the best schedule for a set of projects has been modeled in the form of a generalized tardiness flowshop (GTF) problem. We develop a set of heuristic algorithms for minimizing the total tardiness of jobs in a GTF problem. In the generalized version of tardiness flowshop problems, a job is considered to be a collection of operations and there is a due da...
